Coil Consent

WHEN BOOKING YOUR APPOINTMENT PLEASE SELECT BARCLAY+ AFFORDABLE CARE – THIS SERVICE IS ONLY AVAILABLE IN OUR GLASGOW BRANCH.

Intrauterine devices (IUDs), also known as coils are small T shaped devices that are fitted to sit inside the uterus (womb). They are 99% effective at preventing pregnancy and completely reversible when removed. There are two types of coils: a hormonal coil containing progesterone and a non-hormonal copper coil.

  • You can have a coil fitted or changed at your appointment. If you are looking for a removal, please contact your GP practice.
  • For coil fittings-do not have unprotected sex after your last period until your coil is fitted. This means using condoms consistently and correctly or using another form of reliable hormonal contraception such as the combined pill, patch or ring, progestogen-only pill, injection, or implant.
  • If you are not having regular periods, you should use effective contraception or avoid sex for at least 3 weeks before having your coil fitted.
  • If you are having your in-date coil changed, do not have unprotected intercourse for at least 7 days.
  • Please check when your current device expires (your GP practice can help with this) and if the expiration date has passed, used alternative contraception, or abstain from intercourse.
  • We may not be able to fit your IUS if we think you are at risk of pregnancy. See the next section for more information.
  • Please be aware Levosert and Mirena’s are suitable for 8 Years for contraception.
